KAT 40 prepares to deploy on final exercise

14 February 2013

mail11

KAT 40 (Kandak Advisory Team), 4 Rifles have had a testing build up to deployment; with every man from Rfn to Maj demonstrating his flexibility and adaptability throughout. CSjt Broughton is looking forward to deployment, ‘Life will become calmer once we are deployed and can settle and become focussed on the job’. The KAT has significant Engineer, Artillery and Signals attachments and every effort has been made to integrate them in to an ad hoc Rifles Company.

Training has been at a high tempo with the KAT completing Life Fire Training in Castlemartin, low level skills, conceptual briefs, sharpshooter weapons training and low level patrol rehearsals. The ability within the KAT is now at a high standard and successful working relationships continue to be forged ahead of tour. Annual tests have been completed and the KAT is now polishing the skills and drills they have learned in camp.

With two weddings in Headquarters before the tour and one on our return then there is plenty to celebrate. However the KAT is focussed and fully aware that a dynamic approach will be required as deployment looms. One final test exercise will combine the months of training together and allow the KAT a full run out in an up to date and challenging environment on Salisbury Plain. The KAT will take a well earned break after this before they fly out and the real work begins.

R Company on exercise

13 February 2013

The menAdvising on exercise of R Company 4 Rifles have been hard at it with an intensive training programme since getting back from a well deserved Christmas leave. A comprehensive field firing package has been held at the Lydd and Hythe range complex on the south coast and our Riflemen have enjoyed honing their skills. Training has been undertaken on all the weapon systems available to us in Afghanistan from the individual weapon (the SA80 rifle), the Sharpshooter rifle, the Sniper rifle, combat shotgun and Sig pistol.

Back in camp, the Company is now in an intensive annual training period where lessons such as Battlefield casualty drills, fitness and counter IED training is being conducted interspersed with briefs on the ever changing situation on the ground in Afghanistan. Looking forward we are preparing for our Final Field Training Exercise being held on Salisbury Plain Training area. This exercise will be the last chance we get to prepare before we deploy to Afghanistan in March and will be the culmination of years of training.
