12 Mechanized Brigade Commander Visits 3 RIFLES15th February 2012Brig Doug Chalmers OBE, Commander, 12th Mechanized Brigade, visited 3 RIFLES in Edinburgh as they conduct their final preparations for deploying to Afghanistan on OP HERRICK 16. The Brigade Commander started the day off with a morning run with B Company. The Commanding Officer, Lt Col Charlie Maconochie, and his headquarters then gave the commander an update on their preparation for deployment and life on the home front in Edinburgh.
As C Company were away on their Final Training Exercise, B Company's Officer Commanding (OC) Maj Ian Posgate, gave a comprehensive presentation on how they have trained and prepared for their role. The Warrant Officers’ and Sergeants’ Mess then hosted the Brigadier for lunch. In the afternoon Maj Andrew Ridland, A Company OC, showed off some of their realistic training on our back area. Half of 2 Platoon lead by Sjt Watson went through a well constructed Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attack with casualties. It was designed to test the command and control of the situation along with the all important first aid skills the Riflemen have to master. A quick move to the ranges to the other members of 2 Platoon lead by 2Lt Ben Yates then conducted some live firing with the full compliment of kit to simulate the arduousness of their patrols.
The Commander finished his stay with dinner and drinks in the Officers' Mess. The CO was pleased with how the visit went especially in showing the high-level of training that has been achieved and in demonstrating that 3 Rifles are ready to deploy and more than up for the challenges that lie ahead.
